Homework Guide for Parents

WHAT IS THE PARENT’S ROLE WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR CHILD’S HOMEWORK?

Most parents are unclear about what their role in homework is supposed to be. Parents should be encouraged to be less involved with the child’s actual homework task and more involved in communicating with the teacher – writing notes when students don’t complete work, asking for adaptations, or documenting how much time the child spent on the task. Parents are encouraged to be observers, not enforcers.

Parents are encouraged to:
- Ask their child about what the child is studying in school
- Ask their child to show them any homework assignments
- Assist their child in organizing homework materials
- Help their child formulate a plan for completing homework
- Provide an appropriate space for their child to do homework

Parents may, if they wish:
- Help their child interpret assignment directions
- Proofread their child’s work, pointing out errors
- Read aloud required reading to their child
- Give practice quizzes to their child to help prepare for tests
- Help their child brainstorm ideas for papers or projects
- Praise their child for completing homework

Homework is the student’s responsibility to complete. Although tempting at times, parents should not do the work for the student. If there are issues arising from homework completion, please contact the teacher.

On-Line Math Resource for the Home

The website is Nelson Math (http://www.nelson.com/nelson/schoo ... ). Grades 3 to 8 contain a Student Centre with activities and interactive computer games which enhance and support the curriculum expectations taught daily to your child and corresponds closely to the Nelson student text. Online resources are not presently available for the Grades 7 and 8 Math Makes Sense but the Nelson companion site reviews the same expectations for your child.

In future months, we will be adding more online resources for parents onto our website.
